FUNDING

Scholarship options.

  • President’s Scholarship

Three award levels: full tuition plus a living allowance; full tuition; or 50% tuition. Support lasts for the standard period in the admission letter and requires an annual review. Personal withdrawal or transfer requires repayment and the compensation agreed in the scholarship undertaking; inability to register or continue can end the award.

  • Freshman scholarships

The SMU International Freshman Scholarship and Guangdong Government Freshman Scholarship each offer RMB 10,000 once for selected undergraduates. For the provincial award, pay the fees first; the award is transferred after registration. Awards are selected separately and are not automatically combined.

  • Who can apply

Under 30; high-school three-year average above 75%, with no failed subjects; IELTS 6.0 with each band 5.5, TOEFL 80 with each section 15, or an accepted equivalent or English-medium exemption. No concurrent Chinese Government Scholarship. Provide signed and stamped principal and teacher recommendations, an English study plan and your self-funding preference. Award selection considers assessments, interviews and academic ability. Apply through FirstLiners.

Scholarships depend on eligibility, selection and any required review. Plan for the full fees until an award is granted; fee subtotals do not include scholarship deductions.

YOUR APPLICATION FILE

Documents to prepare.

Provide the complete application file to FirstLiners. Keep clear scans and originals for enrolment checks.

  • Passport information page

Scan of the valid ordinary-passport information page. Former Chinese nationals and relevant Chinese-parentage cases need the university’s nationality review: at least four years holding foreign nationality and two years actually abroad during the preceding four years, ending 30 April of the admission year.

  • Notarized qualification

Scan the highest qualification and its English translation. Final-year students initially submit expected-graduation proof; after pre-admission, supply the final qualification before admission eligibility is granted. Certificates must be notarized. Keep the school-issued original available for verification.

  • Notarized transcripts

Scan all course transcripts from the highest qualification stage and their English translation. Notarize the transcripts. Include all courses and keep originals for later checks.

  • Photograph

Two-inch, blue-background identification photograph without headwear. FirstLiners provides the current university photo format and upload limits.

  • Medical examination

Foreigner Physical Examination Record completed in Chinese or English. Retain the original and a copy for the study-visa application. FirstLiners coordinates examination timing.

  • Language evidence

English-test evidence and introductory Chinese evidence. IELTS Academic 6.0 with each component at least 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80 with each at least 15, or accepted equivalent. Native or wholly English-medium study exemptions require school-issued English-medium evidence. Chinese beginners attend pre-entry training.

  • Self-introduction video

An English self-introduction video, three to five minutes, no larger than 50 MB.

  • Financial guarantee

Self-funded applicants: scan the Chinese/English International Student Financial Guarantee, deposit evidence of at least RMB 150,000 and the relative sponsor’s passport or identity evidence. Only a relative may sponsor. Funds support study, living and travel; this is proof of funds, not an additional charge.

  • Guardian authorization if applicable

Self-funded applicants under 18 on 1 September 2026: two signed, notarized copies of the guardian undertaking. Notarization outside China also requires the Chinese embassy/consulate certification mark. The guardian must be an adult Chinese or foreign resident in China with stable income.

  • Other supporting evidence

Provide supplementary documents if the university requests them. Application documents are not returned whether admission succeeds or fails. Use the university’s own forms where supplied.

  • CSCA report

Mathematics and Chemistry score report. Successful applicants proceed to the university interview.

  • Scholarship supporting documents — if applying

Add principal and one teacher recommendation, each with handwritten signature, contact details and school stamp; an English study plan covering study/work history, undergraduate plans and future goals; and a written statement on accepting self-funded study without an award. Omission of that statement implies consent.

Application and arrival

  • Apply and assess

Apply through FirstLiners and provide the complete application and supporting records. Complete CSCA Mathematics and Chemistry and the university interview.

  • Pre-admission

Results are released in batches. Self-funded applicants must prepay tuition by the deadline in their notice to retain the offer; this payment is part of tuition.

  • Visa and arrival

Electronic JW202 is emailed to the application address, with ten download opportunities. Use it with the admission letter, ordinary passport and original/copy health form for the study visa. Register with the required originals by the date in the offer; FirstLiners coordinates the university’s review of delayed arrival; university approval is required.
