Shantou University Medical College combines a system-based medical curriculum with simulation and hospital learning. Standard English-taught Clinical Medicine lasts six years, including internship. Eligible Bachelor of Science graduates may enter an approved five-year route. Chinese and Medical Chinese prepare students for hospital communication, where Chinese is the working language.

  • Degree routes

    Standard English Clinical Medicine is six years. Eligible Bachelor of Science graduates may seek first-year exemption for a five-year route, subject to academic approval. English Optometry Medicine is five years.

  • Integrated medicine

    The medical curriculum combines twelve system-based courses, six foundational-skills courses and nineteen clinical courses, followed by internship. International students practise in the Medical College’s affiliated hospitals, where Chinese is the working language.

  • Chinese-language requirements

    Chinese and Medical Chinese must meet the college threshold before final-year internship. English-taught graduates must reach Level 4 of the international Chinese-language proficiency standard.

FUNDING

Scholarship options.

  • Guangdong Government Scholarship

    Selected self-funded bachelor students receive a one-off RMB 10,000 award. Freshman applicants must be healthy foreign passport holders under 30, with strong academic records, a study plan and two recommendations.

  • During your degree

    Eligible continuing undergraduates can apply under the annual merit selection. Good academic performance, attendance and conduct are required. This award cannot be combined with a Chinese government scholarship. Apply with FirstLiners; the study fee subtotal is shown before scholarship awards.

Scholarships depend on eligibility, selection and any required review. Plan for the full fees until an award is granted; fee subtotals do not include scholarship deductions.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Entry requirements.

  • Age and qualifications

    Normally aged 18–30 with a high-school diploma or higher; academic-background exceptions require approval. The five-year Clinical Medicine route requires a Bachelor of Science and academic approval. Under-18 applicants on 31 August need guardianship documents.

  • Nationality and health

    Foreign nationality, a valid passport, good physical and mental health and no criminal record are required. Chinese-origin applicants meet four-year nationality and two-year overseas-residence rules with supporting evidence.

  • English

    Non-native speakers provide TOEFL 80, IELTS Academic 6.0, previous-school/university English-medium certification or an accepted equivalent. Graduates from English-speaking countries may receive an exemption.

  • CSCA

    Take Mathematics and at least one of Chemistry or Physics in English. English-taught applicants are exempt from the Professional Chinese CSCA paper.

  • Medical suitability and family

    Colour blindness or colour weakness is excluded. High myopia and specified hearing, vision, smell and speech limitations require careful suitability assessment. Students may not bring accompanying family members to live with them in Shantou during study.

  • CSCA Mathematics plus at least one of Chemistry or Physics is required, using English papers.
  • Financial proof must cover first-year tuition, accommodation, living and travel costs.
  • Chinese proficiency Level 4 is required by graduation, with clinical Chinese preparation before internship.
  • The five-year Clinical Medicine route is for eligible Bachelor of Science graduates with academic approval. High-school applicants follow the six-year route.
  • Standard English Clinical Medicine lasts six years. A five-year route applies only to eligible BSc graduates following academic approval.
  • CSCA Mathematics plus Chemistry or Physics, with at least one of the latter two subjects. Professional Chinese test is not required for English programmes.
  • Chinese proficiency Level 4 is required by graduation. FirstLiners provides the accepted examination and score requirements in your study plan.

Documents to prepare.

Prepare this checklist with FirstLiners for the named medical programme. Keep originals and any required translations or certification ready for registration.

  • Application form

    Complete and sign the international undergraduate application form.

  • Passport

    Provide a passport valid through at least 1 March 2027. Applicants in China also supply a valid Chinese residence visa.

  • Personal statement

    Write a 300-word English statement covering your background, motivation, study plan and post-graduation plans.

  • CV

    Use the university CV template for your full education, employment and volunteering history.

  • Diploma and full transcripts

    Provide FirstLiners with your diploma and every course result with grading criteria. Final-year applicants supply official expected-graduation proof initially and the final qualification before registration.

  • CSCA report

    Provide Mathematics plus Chemistry and/or Physics results taken in English.

  • Recommendation

    Provide a school-letterhead recommendation with affiliation, position, signature and contact details. If a former school cannot be reached after a long absence, a workplace supervisor’s letter may substitute.

  • English evidence

    Provide TOEFL 80, IELTS Academic 6.0, qualifying English-medium certification or an accepted equivalent.

  • Digital photograph

    Use a white-background JPG with face and ears visible and neutral expression: at least 320 × 240 pixels, the specified 4:3 ratio, 100–500 KB.

  • Physical examination and laboratory reports

    Provide the Chinese/English physical-examination form plus blood and other laboratory reports, physician’s signature, hospital seal and stamped photograph. Complete records must be valid within six months.

  • Mental-health report

    Provide a preliminary mental-health report from a locally government-recognised medical institution, with physician’s signature and institution stamp. No prescribed template is given.

  • Police/background check

    Provide valid official clearance from the country of nationality and permanent residence.

  • Application-payment proof

    Provide the non-refundable application-payment receipt. Payment must come from your own or your sponsor’s account.

  • Financial evidence

    Provide a bank-letterhead deposit certificate or the last three months’ statements sufficient for all first-year tuition, housing, living and travel. Sponsor-held funds also require a financial guarantee and sponsor identification.

  • Chinese-origin nationality evidence — if applicable

    Former Chinese citizens provide nationality/hukou cancellation, naturalisation, four-year travel records, overseas residence/study/work evidence and a commitment letter. Foreign nationals from birth with Chinese parentage provide birth-citizenship and parental permanent-residence evidence predating birth, or applicant renunciation evidence, plus four-year travel/residence records and a commitment letter.

  • Guardianship — if under 18

    If under 18 on 31 August of the application year, provide guardian authorisation and the guardian guarantee.

  • Translations

    Other-language documents require notarised or certified Chinese or English translations.
